SPEECH

FORMAT

1. Preliminary Round 1 : Persuasive Speech

A persuasive speech is a specific type of speech in which the speaker has a goal of convincing the audience to accept his or her point of view. The speaker is challenged by how he/she is convincing something. Visual aids (charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, picture, etc.) are optional and may be used to enhance the speech. The speech must be interesting and present valuable and significant information. The main theme is Wonderful Indonesia. The speaker should convince audience to visit a place in Indonesia.

Specific Rules:

1. The speech must be original from the participant’s own perspective.
2. Presentations will take place in normal-sized classrooms with normal-sized doors. A table or desk will be supplied. Presentation aids are supplied by the participants.
3. This category prohibits the use of properties or equipment endangering the health or safety of the participants, audience and judge. This includes, but is not limited to, firearms, sharp knives, dangerous chemicals and animals.
4. The maximum time for each performance is 7 minutes, including setting up and handling any issue. A time extension for 15 seconds is allowed. Exceeding this extension will result in losing one point of the overall assessment score.

2. Preliminary Round 2 : Public Address

The challenge to the speaker is to contribute to the public dialog on a contemporary issue by presenting a well-informed statement which is directly responsive to a question about the issue. As in all speaking categories, the speech must be well organized, clear, and effectively presented. The participants are expected to prepare all the themes that have been provided by the committee. Each participant gets one topic in a randomly selected way before the competition starts.

Some possible topic areas and specific questions are:

1. Sexual harassment: What is the line between sexual harassment and affection?
2. Government: The government dissolved the prostitution centre without any follow-up so that prostitutes spread out of control. According to you, does the government already solve the problem?
3. Depression: Why Indonesian doesn’t take depression seriously and tend to make it worse?
4. Social Media: Does social media influence someone’s insecurities?
5. Social Awareness: If there is an accident, people tend to record it instead of helping. What do you think about the condition?
6. Government: If ex-convicts are allowed to run as a public official in government. What do you think about that?
7. LGBT: If the government banned LGBT in Indonesia, does it include as a violation of human rights?
8. Education: What is the impact of curriculum inconsistency on the quality of education in Indonesia?

Specific Rules:

1. The speech must be original from the participant’s own perspective.
2. Audio/visual aids or materials are not permitted.
3. The maximum time for each performance is 7 minutes. A time extension for 15 seconds is allowed. Exceeding this extension will result in losing one point of the overall assessment score.
4. The finalists are allowed to bring a note.
5. The use of both sides of one 4×6 note card is optional.

3. Octo –Final : Extemporaneous Speech

Participants will choose one envelope of eight envelopes available, which contains the article and three questions that are related to the topic by the committee. The questions are supported by an article. Participants are required to summarize the answer of the questions and create a speech out of it.

Specific Rules:

1. The Top Eight finalists will be given three to five minutes speech whose the questions and article will be given in the octo-final round.
2. The speech must be original from the participant’s own perspective.
3. The committee will provide questions.
4. Participants are allowed to choose only one envelope from eight envelopes available which contain the article and three questions.
5. Questions are related to one topic.
6. Sources of the topic will be provided.
7. Audio/visual aids or materials are not permitted.
8. The finalists will be given the time up to thirty minutes to prepare the speeches.
9. The finalists are allowed to bring a note.
10. The use of both sides of one 4×6 note card is optional.

4. Final : Impromptu (Oratory Speech)

In Oratory speech, the oration is expected to be thoroughly prepared and well composed on a significant topic. In this final round, the participants will deliver topics given by the committee spontaneously.

As such, the oration must be unequivocally persuasive in its purpose. It may fulfill its persuasive challenge in one of three ways: 1) by alerting the audience to the existence of a problem; 2) by affirming the existence of a problem and offering a solution; 3) by urging the adoption of a policy.

Specific rules:

1. The top three finalists will be given three to five minutes impromptu speeches whose topic or theme will be given in the final round a day after the final announcement.
2. The finalists will be given the time up to thirty minutes to prepare the speeches.
3. The finalists are allowed to bring a note.
4. The finalists will not be allowed to watch other finalist performance.
5. After delivering the speeches, all participants will be asked by each judge some questions related to the speech content and the finalists have to answer or give responses toward the questions (not exceeding more than one minute for each question).
6. The use of both sides of one 4×6 note card is optional.
