Speaking Club is an annual event organized by the Public Speaking Department of SAFEL (Student Activity Forum of Foreign Language), intended only for SAFEL members and crews. It is a forum for learning, finding, and exploring the SAFEL members’ and crews’ English-speaking skills. Here, we provide a place where the participants can practice and directly implement their English-speaking skills. The Speaking Club routinely invites foreigners from various countries every year. This year, the Speaking Club invited one foreigner, Liman from Saudi Arabia. After two years online, this is the first time Speaking Club has been implemented offline. It’s a great start to have Speaking Club offline, even though sometimes we still have it online for the weekly meeting.
Speaking Club 2022 carried the theme “Speak Your Character, Be Spectacular!”. The theme embodies our hope that participants can show their true character with their speaking skills. Speaking Club 2022 was held in October-November 2022, and the persons in charge of Speaking Club 2022 were Angeli Carissa (Angeli) and Rokhwal’ Iisy (Isye).
Still the same as the previous year, the 2022 Speaking Club was held for seven weeks, consisting of four weekly meetings and three big meetings. There are so many participants in Speaking Club 2022. As a result, the number of participants exceeded the existing target. During the Speaking Club, participants were divided into six groups, namely, “Stones in Marvel Movies.” There are the Reality Stone, the Soul Stone, the Mind Stone, the Time Stone, the Space Stone, and the Power Stone. Each group consists of approximately 12 members and two coaches. In the weekly meetings, each group had a routine meeting once a week, but big meetings were carried out together and accompanied by the invited foreigners.
Participants were given various exciting topics in each weekly meeting to discuss later in English. These topics were taken from the previous year and were the ones that were considered easy to discuss and attractive. Topics include: “What does your home feel like?”, “Where’s your dream place?”, “What makes a character stand out?”, and “Whom fictional character would you like to switch lives with for a day?” Not to mention, we also had a game session in the second and fourth weekly meetings before starting the discussion.
Then, in the first big meeting, we introduced the speaker, and he gave a presentation about encouraging ourselves to increase our speaking skills. It was continued with a group discussion where the participants and coaches introduced themselves to each other. In the second big meeting, we had a project about reviewing the unknown. Each group was divided into pairs to do the project and make a video about the review. They had to review something without showing the real thing. Then, the coaches chose one group of representatives to perform on the day of the second big meeting. The participants could guess what the real thing was that the groups were reviewing at the end of the performances. There was a reward for the participants in the categories of the best speaker review, the best performance review, and the best material review. The winners received vouchers that could be exchanged for gifts at the big final meeting.
Coming to an end, the final big meeting of Speaking Club 2022 had a remarkable thing happen. We conducted the meeting with every participant, and the audience had to wear costumes as the final project of the Speaking Club was performing a drama. Each group performed with various genres of drama and spectacular costumes. There was also a reward for the participants in the categories of the best speaker Speaking Club 2022, the best drama, the best actor, the best actress, and the best costume. The winners got medals and keyrings as a reward for their hard work in the Speaking Club 2022. We also gave our foreign visitors a gift—Liman—along with a certificate of appreciation. We had an enjoyable time and gained a lot of experience in the Speaking Club 2022, and we hope that Speaking Club 2023 will have better creation and innovation.
