Speaking Club is one of annual programs from UKM Bahasa Asing “SAFEL” in Public Speaking Department which held as a forum for learning, improving, and exploring English Speaking skills. This club is intended for SAFEL’s crews and members to be able to speak English confidently especially in a forum. Aside from facilitating the participants to increase their self-confidence in speaking English, this club also facilitates them to be able to express the ideas or opinions about the highlight topics by some discussions in each meeting.
This year, Speaking Club was held around October to November. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic that is not over, Speaking Club 2020 was held online. Accordingly, Speaking Club 2020 brought up the theme: “Together Be Friends and Break The Distance”.
Speaking Club was held in 5 meetings that consist of 2 big meetings and 3 smalls meetings. The big meeting was held at the first and final meetings. On the other hand, the small meeting was held weekly at the second, third, and fourth meetings. The activities of this club are in form of a group discussion. All participants were divided into several small groups and were accompanied by two LOs. The LOs routinely give some topics related to our theme to discuss in the weekly meeting.
At the first meeting, all participants were gathered together in a Zoom Meeting before being divided into small groups. After that, they are given time to move into a Google Meet to gather with their group and LOs for introducing and discussing the weekly meetings schedule. Also, in the first meeting, there was a foreigner from Germany who presented as a special guest and also delivered a couple of messages and motivations to encourage all participants in learning new languages.
After the first meeting was over, the next meeting was a weekly meeting that is held according to the schedule agreed upon by the group. Weekly meetings were held three times before the last meeting which were the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th meetings. The participants in the second meeting discussed about the general information and regional cultures of their partner while on the third meeting they discussed about the activities of their partner during the pandemic. Then on the fourth meeting, they discussed about finding new friends during the pandemic Between the LOs and participants, they discussed freely and give their opinions on the topic. Then, the participants also shared their self experiences towards each other and the LOs at the same time.
The next meeting was the final meeting. Because this is the last meeting in the series of Speaking Club 2020, there was the last project which was an acting challenge video for the participants. The theme of this acting challenge video was about the selected Disney movies of each group’s character, including The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, Snow White and The Seven Dwarf, and Sleeping Beauty. The top ten videos were displayed at the final meeting. After all of the videos were displayed, the next agenda was awarding, which held to announce 3 categories of champions namely; the bright person, the best actor, and the most outstanding video.
Last but not least, we would like to send our warm thanks for all the participants who had joined and supported Speaking Club 2020. Hopefully, this pandemic will over really soon, so we can see and talk more intensely with each other directly next year. See you at Speaking Club 2021!
