Speaking Club is a program from Public Speaking Department which is held as a forum to learn to speak English.  It is held once in a management period around September to November. Speaking Club is only for SAFEL’s crew and members. Aside from being a discussion forum and learning to speak English, speaking club also aims to tie ties between SAFEL members to one another. In the series of speaking club, there are many benefits that can be felt including increasing confidence in speaking in English, being able to express ideas or opinions about things shared by other friends.

The activities of Speaking Club is in form of a group discussion.  Participants are divided into several small groups in which each group is accompanied by LOs.  The name of the group will be adjusted to the theme raised in the period or in accordance with the decision of the chiefs. This year, we proudly to announce that our theme is “Recalling the Past, Figuring the Future”.  Each group will consist of various study programs and majors at UNY.  In a series of speaking club, 7 meetings are held, consisting of 3 large meetings and 4 small weekly meetings.  A large meeting is held at the first, fourth and final meeting.  For weekly meetings held every week between large meetings with a schedule based on the agreement of each group.

At the first meeting, all participants were gathered together before being divided into small groups.  After that, they will be given time to gather with their LO for introducing and discussing the weekly meetings schedule.  In addition, in the first meeting, there will be a foreigner from English speaking country who will  present as a guest and also deliver a number of messages and motivations to encourage all participants.

After the first meeting is over, the next meeting is a weekly meeting that is held according to the schedule agreed upon by the group.  Weekly meetings are held twice before the 4th meeting, which is the 2nd and 3rd meetings, which each discuss sad experience and unexpected experience.  Then for the 4th meeting, it was divided into 2 sessions, the first session is for the “bright person” candidates to deliver their story telling. The second session is group discussions. In the group discussion, the whole group will be gathered into one circle and then each group will present their assignments that had been given in the previous week. The topic is “all about Australia” since our  foreigner comes from Australia. After each group presents their material, the other groups are allowed to give responses or ask questions toward the material presented.

The next meeting is other weekly meetings , which are the 5th and 6th meeting that are merged into one at the 5th meeting since  the week for the 6th meeting coincides with the SAFEL’s Studi Banding. The topic discussed at the 5th and 6th meeting is “What to do before and after graduate”.  There, they are not only discussing the topic, but also discussing the preparation of the mini drama that will be shown in the final meeting. The theme of this year’s drama is “Musical Drama” with several films to be presented, including Frozen, Kabi Kushi Kabhi Gam, Aladdin, Dilan 1998, and DOTS.  On the final meeting, each group performed like nothing to loose, in accordance with the purpose of the final meeting, which is to have fun. After all of the group show their performance, the next agenda is awarding, that held to announce 3 categories of champions namely, bright person, best actor, and the most outstanding group.
