In this era, English-speaking skills are one of the most important things to learn. The Internet has made everyone around the world easily connected. Hence, we have to build up the courage and confidence to speak English so we can deliver messages better. To achieve this, the SAFEL Speaking Forum (SAFEL) has continued to provide a place for the crews to improve their English-speaking skills. This program is held twice a month for four months by all departments in SAFEL. Because the pandemic is completely over, we finally made the implementation offline this year too.
With the theme “Train Yourself Up to the Sky”, SERUM 2023 aims to train all of the crews’ speaking skills to the fullest. Other than that, this program is expected to help all of the crews have a strong bond. Various things related to personal life, such as likings, preferences, and thoughts, were used as the topic for each meeting.
This year, SERUM was held from June to September. It is divided into two types of meetings: two big meetings and six weekly meetings, for a total of eight meetings. Weekly meetings were held twice a month, with the dates and platform decided by the department. The big meetings were held at the beginning and end of this event, and all the departments were brought together in one forum. The big meetings were held in the Student Center.
At the weekly meeting, every department will hold a meeting where each member of staff has to share their opinion or experience regarding the given topic. Each person will have 10–15 minutes to deliver the sharing, which will also include responses from other staff. The weekly meetings are held with the agreement of each department, so there will be more fun because every department has their own preference regarding places and the technical styles.
At the first big meeting, the Head of SERUM shared about the overview, such as the technical, dos and don’ts, timeline, etc., so that all of the staff could get a better understanding of SERUM. After that, the crews will be divided into five groups with different departments. They played the well-known Werewolf games, which, of course, used English, so that they could practice their speaking skills in English. Lastly, there will be padlet sessions where everyone is allowed to convey their feelings regarding the First Big Meeting’s activities.
At the second big meeting, all of the departments will perform a drama. The drama will be performed live and will be assessed by the special guest. There is also an awarding session for the staff.
Eventually, SERUM 2023 will become a place for all the SAFEL’s crews to improve their English-speaking skills while having fun!
