There’s always tons of reason to learn a new language. One could be for academic or work demands; one could be to be able to connect with people outside their country; or maybe just to look cool among their friends. Whatever the reason, learning a foreign language is very important nowadays. Mastering one or more languages outside of their mother tongue can boost their self-esteem. This will make it easier for the person to compete in their school or workplace. Mastering a foreign language also makes it easier for them to connect with many people since there is no longer a language barrier between them and people outside their native language. With all these reasons and benefits, of course, there are many people who want to learn a foreign language. Therefore, PELBA is here to facilitate the wishes of people who want to learn a foreign language!
Pelatihan Bahasa Asing (PELBA) is a program from the FOLT department that is concerned with learning languages. PELBA’s main purpose is to facilitate UKM Bahasa Asing SAFEL UNY members, UNY students, and the public who want to deepen their foreign languages or who want to learn new foreign languages. PELBA is one of the big events at UKM Bahasa Asing SAFEL UNY. This program is held annually. In PELBA, there are six language class options available. These are the official languages of SAFEL, which consist of English, German, French, Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese.
As we are still in transition from the COVID-19 era, this year’s PELBA is still held online through Zoom Clouds Meeting, WhatsApp Group, and Google Classroom. But this does not detract from the essence of PELBA, as the committee and tutors put in their best efforts so that the participants have a pleasant learning experience. PELBA is held in November, from November 1st until November 30th, 2023. Registration for the program began on October 15th and ended on October 28th, 2023. Participants register themselves by paying the registration fee, sending confirmation to the committee, and then filling out the registration form. There are three categories of registration fees: 25,000 for SAFEL members and officers, 30,000 for UNY students, and 35,000 for the public.
Although we would love to welcome everyone who is enthusiastic about learning a foreign language at PELBA, PELBA has limited seats for only 35 participants per class. There are 12 meetings, including the final exam, for each class. Therefore, all classes hold about three classes per week. Each meeting has a duration of 90 minutes. For English class, it was held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; German class was on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday; French class was on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; Korean class was on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; Mandarin class was on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; and lastly, Japanese class was on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Participants do not need to worry about the quality of the class material because we work with professional and experienced tutors for each class.
