“One Day in Action” or ODIA is a workshop activity aimed at training SAFEL’s crews and members in public speaking skills. Continuing from the previous year, ODIA focused on public speaking. One Day in Action UKM Bahasa Asing “SAFEL” in 2022 brought up the theme “Lead the Change in Youth through Your Words”.
One Day in Action really needs to be carried out considering that there are so many “SAFEL” events that require qualified and trained public speaking skills. It is hoped that ODIA will be able to foster the interest of SAFEL members and crews in practicing their speaking skills and public speaking professionally. Besides that, ODIA is also the essence of the public speaking activity itself, which includes how to construct and perform a good speech.
This year, ODIA was held on Sunday, February 27th. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ODIA 2022 was carried out online via the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform with an activity format like a webinar or workshop with two sessions, namely a material session and a practical session. There were 42 participants who were registered for this activity, and there were 33 participants who confirmed their attendance.
The guest speaker for this event is an extraordinary speaker, namely Marvel Ramadhani Amarel. He is an expert in the field of public speaking, especially in speech. The delivery of material by Marvel further narrowed the discussion towards one type of speech, namely persuasive speech.
After the delivery of the material and the question-and-answer session, it was continued with a practical session followed by all participants, who were divided into seven groups. The practical activity was done in the form of composing speeches in two languages, Bahasa Indonesia and English. Participants in each group composed a speech text with the theme “How to Embody a Better “SAFEL” through Members’ Performances”. This practical discussion activity utilized the breakout room feature in Zoom.
In the speech preparation session, each group was guided by one person as the Liaison Officer. LO directed the participants to determine the points on the predetermined theme and continued with the translation of the speech text. At the end of the session, the LO of the group led a discussion among the group members to select two people to be their representatives who would deliver their speech in the main room.
After the group discussion session was finished, it was continued with the delivery of speeches by each group’s representatives. The delivery of the first speech began with Bahasa Indonesia speech and continued with English speech. The speech delivered by the participants was directly assessed by the guest speaker and ended with awards. Among others, there were two categories in the awards, namely, the best Bahasa Indonesia speaker and the best English speaker.
