Minggu Lingua (MINGLING) is one of the new programs in UKM Bahasa Asing “SAFEL” UNY under the department of FOLT. This program is intended to give language training to the SAFEL’s staffs. Minggu Lingua 2020 was held online every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 5th July to 30th July 2020.

This year, we chose Japanese as the language that we would learn. Minggu Lingua (MINGLING) was tutored by Anindhita Sasanti Rahajeng from the PR department. The online class lasted for one hour from 7-8 p.m.. The participants were all staff of SAFEL who came from many departments and sub-departments such as FOLT, CCU-LM, PR, HRD, PS, MPO, EDS, and SDC.

Minggu Lingua (MINGLING) 2020 had a different teaching system from last year due to Covid-19. It was held online through the WhatsApp group. The materials were delivered in the form of posters and videos. The videos were posted every Tuesday and the posters were posted every Thursday and Sunday.

There were different themes for each week. The first week was “Greetings”, the second week was “Daily Activity”, the third week was “Hobby”, and the last week was “Traveling”. Japanese alphabets were also added to the materials.

After the materials were posted in the group, some participants might share the video or poster to their WhatsApp story so that not only the members of the group could learn, but also the others.

If the participants could not understand the materials, they were allowed to ask directly in the group when the moderator had let them. The tutor answered every question in the group chat. When they still could not understand, they could ask the tutor by private chat after the class was finished.

After Minggu Lingua (MINGLING) finished, there was a challenge called Mingling Challenge. This challenge was aimed to check the participants’ ability and improvement in Japanese.

The participants had to make a video and choose the topic based on their interests. After that, they practiced what they had learned in Minggu Lingua (MINGLING) in one minute video. They should upload it on their Instagram with #LearningJapaneseWithFoltAndSasa and tag @safeluny.

The winners were chosen by Anindhita as the tutor. The winners’ videos were reposted at SAFEL’s Instagram. The first winner was Annisa Maharani from the Public Speaking department, the second winner was Fuji Damayanti from the Secretary of SAFEL, and the third winner was Prakoso Ilham Pamungkas from Public Relation department.

Not all participants in the group could join the class because they might be not interested in Japanese or they had other businesses. Despite the fact that they don’t like Japanese, they still support others to learn eagerly.

Minggu Lingua (MINGLING) 2020 was really fun. Even though we were in the middle of the pandemic, we still could learn with other alternatives. The committees prepared this event well. Time went fast. We should end this class after learning for a month. We hope that the MINGLING next year will be better and there will be more innovations.-Zale-
