Finding new information does not always come from reading a thick book. Many people have developed media and methods that combine learning and playing to make learning feels more fun. One of CCU-LM’s programs named Learning Media carries the same purpose.

CCU-LM’s Learning Media aims to provide new information related to the cultures and languages from the five countries SAFEL focus on, in various form of media. Previously, we had developed vocabulary cards in different languages to be attached to every object in our secretariat.

Then, we also have modified quartet-game to be more informative. When we play this card game, we also learn new vocabulary from other languages (English, French, German, Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin). So, the more we play the game, the more we can memorize those words. Sounds fun, isn’t it?

Furthermore, we also made Hiragana-Katana cards last year. This set of cards aims to guide and teach you how to write Hiragana and Katakana characters properly.

This year, CCU-LM’s learning media came in a different form due to the condition we face. Since everything holds online, CCU-LM also wants to bring learning media that is accessible from home. Therefore, we made CCU-LM’s Crossword Puzzle.

This puzzle consists of 20 questions distributed quite equally across and down. This puzzle is in a form of a word document so the participants can access and edit it easily to answer the questions. This program was held twice in August and September via WhatsApp group chat.

We distributed the first puzzle on SAFEL’s staff group chat in August under the theme of the Festival. Then, the second puzzle was distributed both in SAFEL’s staff and member group chat in September with the theme of Myths. Each puzzle contains 20 questions that aimed to enrich SAFEL’s staff and members’ knowledge.

The participants are required to answer the questions and upload them on google form to be assessed by CCU-LM’s staff. The first participant, who answers all the questions correctly, will be announced two days after the puzzle has been distributed as the winner.

Twenty participants have joined this event. Most of them answer all the questions correctly. However, the winners were those who answered the puzzle correctly and submitted it on time. The winner for August Crossword Puzzle is Chevina from Public Speaking Department, and the winner for the September Crossword Puzzle is Syka, a member of SAFEL.

This Crossword Puzzle event has run successfully. Thanks to all the enthusiasm of all participants and all the support from CCU-LM’s staff. Hopefully, by joining in this event, the participants can open their minds that there are many things about culture and language that we can explore through media such as puzzles. (by Sondang Margaretha Sihite)
