Speaking Club is an annual event organized by the Public Speaking Department of SAFEL (Student Activity Forum of Foreign Language), intended only for SAFEL members and crews. It is a forum for learning, finding, and exploring the SAFEL members’ and crews’ English-speaking skills. Here, we provide a place where the participants can practice and directly implement their English-speaking skills. The Speaking Club routinely invites foreigners from various countries every year. This year, the Speaking Club invited one foreigner, Muqqadas, from Pakistan, and we held it fully offline.
Speaking Club 2023 carried the theme “Dive the Conversation, Expand the Language Exploration!” The theme embodies our hope that participants can expand their knowledge more with their speaking skills, especially in conversation. Speaking Club 2023 was held in October–November 2023, and the person in charge of Speaking Club 2023 was Khairatul Mardiah.
Different from the previous year, the 2023 Speaking Club was held with three weekly meetings and two big meetings. There are so many participants in the Speaking Club 2023. As a result, the number of participants exceeds the existing target. During the speaking club, participants were divided into five groups, namely, animals in the sea. There are sharks, dolphins, crabs, starfish, and jellyfish. Each group consists of approximately 16 members and two coaches. In the weekly meetings, each group had a routine meeting once a week, but big meetings were carried out together and accompanied by the invited foreigners.
Participants were given various exciting topics in each weekly meeting to discuss later in English. These topics were taken from the previous year and the themes that were considered easy to discuss and attractive. Then, in the first big meeting, we introduced the speaker, and she gave a presentation about encouraging ourselves to increase our speaking skills. It was continued with a group discussion where the participants and coaches introduced themselves to each other.
Come to an end, the final big meeting of Speaking Club 2023 had a remarkable thing. We conducted the meeting with every participant, and the audience had to wear a costume as the final project of the Speaking Club was performing a drama. Each group performed with various genres of drama and spectacular costumes.
There was also a reward for the participants in the categories of the best speaker, Speaking Club 2023, the best drama, the best actor, the best actress, and the best costume. The winners got medals and pins as a reward for their hard work in the Speaking Club 2023. We also gave a gift to our foreigners—Muqaddas—along with a certificate of appreciation. We had an enjoyable time and got a lot of experience in the Speaking Club 2023, and we hope that the Speaking Club 2024 will have better creation and innovation. See you in Speaking Club 2024!
