Workshop on Debating (WOD) is an annual program of the Public Speaking Department UKM SAFEL UNY collaborate with English Debating Society (EDS) UNY. This workshop aims to increase the debating skill and make college students and high school students in Indonesia know the basic skill of debating. Workshop on Debating UKM Bahasa Asing “SAFEL” in 2021 brought the theme “Speak Your Word and Build Your World”. Different from the previous year, this year’s WOD was held online. This event was held in one day with about 40 people joined it from college students and senior high school students in Indonesia.
In this event, we have Kak Citra Dewi Harmia as our speaker in the Workshop on Debating 2 UKM Bahasa Asing “SAFEL” in 2021. She has experienced in parliamentary debating, debate coaching, and English teaching for high school and university students. participants were introduced to the British Parliamentary (BP) system. After that, there was also an exhibition from the English Debating Society UNY. After knowing the systems, representative participants were set to have a debate competition simulation. The members of each team were selected randomly. The best speaker of the debate competition simulation would get prizes.
The motion of the debate competition simulation is “This house regrets the glorification of success stories in education”. The participants were divided randomly into breakout rooms and they will discuss further motions and their role in the debate which will also be assisted by exhibitors from EDS UNY and the WOD Committee. There were 4 break out rooms
- Opening Government
- Opening Opposition
- Closing Government
- Closing Opposition
After discussion, the exhibitors and the WOD committee will choose the representative in each team. Each team will be represented by two members. After that, they will case-building but the other members who don’t represent the team will also help them to make the argument.
The debate competition simulation began after ISHOMA at 13:00 p.m. Each member has an opportunity to deliver their speech in 7 minutes 20 seconds. After having a very dynamic and hot debate, there will be a Post-Debate Analysis by Kak Citra and continued by announced the winner of the best speaker and the best participant.
The winner of the best speaker is Mizan Ul Haq and the best participant is Restu Pramuda Wardani. The best speaker was chosen by Kak Citra with a certain accumulate score and the best participant was chosen by the exhibitors from EDS UNY and the WOD committees after they observe and assess the activity of participants during the event. -Bella-
