One Day With SAFEL (ODWS) is a program of the FOLT department of the UKM ‘SAFEL’ UNY based on service to the community which aims to provide education about foreign languages and cultures to the target community. In ODWS 2024, we raised the theme “Sweet Adventure: A Day of Journey in Language and Culture” with the hope that this program can build strong relationships by increasing knowledge related to foreign languages and cultures for the younger generation. This year, ODWS collaborated with TPA Al-Hasanah, Donokerto Village.
This TPA serves as a place of learning for children to explore religious knowledge and learn to read and write from an early age. This year’s ODWS will be held on 8 September 2024 and can be carried out offline at TPA Al-Hasanah, Donokerto Village.
The first activity of ODWS is recruitment for offline and online volunteers. This year, we recruited 16 offline volunteers from the SAFEL board and 44 online volunteers. Furthermore, volunteers are required to conduct an online campaign through twibbon uploads, infographics about the community, and captions on the Instagram platform. After the online campaign was completed, the offline activities were then carried out.
This event consisted of three game posts, each post introducing two countries with different activities. The volunteers play a big part in this session. The children were divided into groups and followed a series from post 1 to post 3. In the first post, they learned greetings in French and German, recognized traditional foods from different countries through pictures, and put together a puzzle with pictures of these foods. In the second post, they learned greetings in English and Chinese, recognized body parts in English, and played concentration games. In the third post, the children learned greetings in Korean and Japanese, and played the traditional Korean game “Red Light, Green Light.” The children looked happy and engaged during the game activities. All these activities aimed to introduce the children to the languages and cultures of different countries.
